Story:
Inspired by a photomicrograph from Dr. Margaret Essenberg
The micrograph shows the sites of resistance responses in a leaf of cotton to Xanthomonas campestris pv. malvacearum in the field. It is a transmitted white light micrograph showing four sites of attempted infection, with red epidermal cells surrounding the areas of hypersensitive resistant responses. (DOI: 10.1016/j.phytochem.2008.05.021)
Margaret was my boss in graduate school at Oklahoma State University. Our research was looking at the response of resistant cotton lines to infection with Xanthomonas campestris pv. malvacearum, the bacteria causing bacterial blight of cotton.
